Advent candle ceremony, 30th November, 2014

Advent candle ceremony, 30th November, 2014

The first day of Advent is the time to light the first candle of the Advent wreath during the spectacular ceremony in front of the St. Stephen Basilica. The Feast is opened by Szentgyörgyvölgyi Péter, the Mayor of Lipótváros (District V), then the patrons of the event welcome people and they light the Christmas decoration of the square and its surroundings together. György Snell protonotary canon also greets the visitors, blesses and lights the first purple candle that symbolises the familiar atmosphere we would like to pass to every home in Budapest. This illuminating program is broadcasted to millions of people on TV, as well.

Right after the ceremony the ice rink awaits visitors and a special attraction, the videomapping show begins on the monumental facade of the Basilica. The aim of the organizers is to exceed a Christmas market with special atmosphere and become a meeting point full of experience for friends and families during this winter. As the new motto of the Feast emphasizes; „Togetherness makes Christmas an experience”.

The 3D effect animations are the most popular program of the Advent Feast. The colourful Christmas and spiritual motifs come alive in perfect union with the architecture and represent the largest and most spectacular visual experience of Budapest during holiday. The themes of the four films are the Advent and Christmas habits in a playful, idyllic mood. The Hungarian artists wished to present meaningful, but also picturesque scenes.

The projection is visible and audible from almost every part of the square so that you can enjoy classic Hungarian tones or traditional folk music, too. Although the light painting starts only after dark, at 16.30, it is still early enough to join for each family with kids.

Every half an hour, every day between 4.30 pm and 8 pm.

Göncöl Folk Dance Ensemble

The Göncöl Folk Dance Ensemble is founded by Gergely Csiki folk dance pedagogue in Budapest, in autumn 2012. It is not only a team of good dancers, but also a society of families, friends and supporters. They aim to keep traditions alive and show its beauty to each generation. The ensemble took part for example at Ecouri Mesesene International Folk Dance Festival and now performs at the Advent Feast.

Every Friday and Saturday they are invited to perform twenty minute shows. They either improvise a ‘dance house’ that all the guests of the fair may join or surprise the audience by vivid flash mobs.

Every Friday and Saturday from 5 pm (starting 29th of November).

The retired community of District V organises plenty of artisan programs at the Advent Feast at Basilica. They welcome all members of the family to paint and handcraft gifts or toys. This year again they organise a cake competition that is now one of the traditional programs of the market.

Every day during the opening time.
